Environmental NEWS - Spring 2008
USEPA recently announced the availability of Final Update IV to the Third Edition of SW-846. A notice in the Federal Register published on January 3, 2008, describes the changes, which include 24 revised test methods, 23 new test methods and 44 test methods that have been deleted or incorporated into other methods. Based on the Methods Innovation Rule, which removed requirements to use SW-846 methods from the RCRA hazardous waste regulations, USEPA is issuing this update as guidance. In addition to the Update IV methods, the agency is publishing new SW-846 methods on their website. All of these new and revised SW-846 methods are intended to be guidance methods that can be used for any RCRA application if their performance can be demonstrated to be appropriate.
Lancaster Laboratories is in the process of reviewing the new and modified methods to determine the impact of their implementation. Because some of the updates contain significant modifications that could impact results generated by their use, Lancaster Laboratories will continue to offer existing test methods as new versions are phased in. None of the methods deleted in Update IV are employed for testing at Lancaster Laboratories.
